On Friday, Brazil welcomed France to recognize the state of Palestine, and “urged all other countries that have not yet done this” to make the same decision.
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement, that “the recognition of a growing number of countries in the Palestinian state (…) contributes to meeting the aspirations of peace in the region and freedom and determining the fate of the Palestinian people,” according to the “French Press Agency.”
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that his country will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
Brazil has recognized the State of Palestine since 2010, and calls for a “two -state solution” of the Israeli -Palestinian conflict.
The left -wing Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel of committing a “genocide” in the besieged Gaza Strip, which suffers from hunger and destruction due to the 21 -month war.
Earlier in the week, the Brazilian government revealed that it intends to join the case that South Africa filed before the International Court of Justice against Israel on charges of “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
According to a census of the French Press Agency, at least 142 countries have already recognized or planned to recognize the State of Palestine. Several countries announced the decision to recognize after the start of the current war in the Gaza Strip.
