A message showed by Reuters news agency showed today, Friday, that the Undersecretary of the United Nations Secretary -General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher called on Israel to provide evidence of its accusations that employees of the United Nations Office to Coordinate Humanitarian Affairs have links to the Palestinian “Hamas” movement.
At a meeting of the UN Security Council held on Wednesday, Danny Danon, the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, announced that Fletcher and the Office of Humanitarian Affairs Coordination (OCHA no longer neutral, and that hundreds of office employees would undergo a security examination. He added that Israel will shorten the duration of the office’s employees visas to one month.
“Israel revealed clear evidence of (Hamas) links within the ranks of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs” without providing evidence.
In a letter to the Security Council, yesterday, Thursday, Fletcher said that the statements of Danone formed the first time that such fear has been raised, and that the accusations are “very dangerous and have security effects on our employees.”
“I expect the Israeli authorities to participate immediately any evidence that prompted them to make such allegations before the council,” said Fleecher.
He pointed out that the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs continues around the world with all the parties concerned in any armed conflict to secure the arrival of humanitarian aid, to pressure to protect civilians, and enhance respect for humanitarian principles. He added, “As the Israeli authorities learned, we supported our contacts with (Hamas) also the release of the hostages.”
Danone said that Israel is committed to the help of civilians, and to connect aid to the needy, but he added: “We will not work with organizations that have chosen politics on principles.”
“We must obligate all parties to the standards of international law in this conflict … We do not choose between demanding the end of the starvation of civilians in Gaza and demanding an unconditional release of all the hostages,” Fletcher wrote in his letter.
Israel, which controls all the supplies entering the Gaza Strip, denies responsibility for the lack of food.
