“American elders” hinders two attempts to ban arms sales to Israel Arabausa

Yesterday, Wednesday, the US Senate obstructed two decisions that would ban arms sales to Israel in response to civilian casualties in Gaza, but they had more support than similar measures that Congress witnessed earlier this year.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent of Vermont and a supporter of Democrats, presented the two resolutions. And they were subjected to a majority of 73 votes compared to 24 and 70 votes compared to 27 in the council consisting of 100 members, in a vote late yesterday evening.

Two similar decisions, which were also presented by Sanders, were obstructed by a majority of 82 votes compared to 15 votes and 83 votes compared to 15 April.

The strong traditional support for decades from the two parties of Israel in Congress means that it is unlikely to agree to any decisions aimed at stopping arms sales to it, but supporters hope that this issue will encourage the government of Israel and the US administration to make more efforts to protect civilians.

All the voices supporting the two democratic decisions came, while all the Republican Party deputies against President Donald Trump opposed them.

The result of the vote showed how pictures of the famine received from Gaza began to make a growing division among American deputies, who traditionally supported Israel with an overwhelming majority of the Democratic and Republican parties.

In a statement, Sanders expressed his happiness to support the majority of the democratic bloc of his pursuit.

He said: «Things began to change. The American people do not want to spend billions of dollars to starve Gaza’s children … Democrats are continuing in this case and I look forward to supporting Republicans in the near future.
