The Turkish opposition leader confirms the stand behind the nomination of Imamoglu to the presidency
The Turkish authorities detained 25 suspects in the latest wave of arrests, in the context of investigations into corruption suspicions in Istanbul, while the opposition leader confirmed the head of the Republican People’s Party, Ozgor Ozil that the party adheres to the nomination of the detained mayor, Akram, Imamoglu, to the presidency, and trust in this decision.
Among those who decided the Public Prosecution Office in Istanbul, on Wednesday, their detention, executive officials in the municipality, including the director of the Public Transport Company, and officials and employees of the Istanbul Company for the manufacture and trade of asphalt.
The Turkish police implemented a wave of arrests, on Tuesday, as part of the investigations related to an alleged corruption in the Istanbul municipality, whose facts began to arrest its president, Akram Imamoglu, the most prominent competitors of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the presidency.
The prosecution accused the suspects of falsifying public tenders offered by the municipal road company from among other matters, while the opposition said that investigations are targeting its political leaders, and it comes within a series of “political” investigations aimed at weakening the party that surpasses for the first time, more than 20 years ago, on the ruling “Justice and Development Party”, in the recent local elections held on March 31, 2024, and preventing the party’s candidate, and preventing the party’s candidate, The president, the Imamoglu, honored the elections as the largest competitor to Erdogan.
Nomination of Imamoglu
In the same context, the head of the Republican People’s Party, Ozgor Ozil, stressed that the Imam of Oglu is the presidential party candidate, and that the party is standing with full force behind this decision.
Ozil, who visited the Imamoglu in his prison in Silveri prison, west of Istanbul, said on Wednesday that the party has alternative plans if the Imamoglu was refused to be nominated if there are possible early elections.
He added: «We will strive to provide all the conditions and foundations necessary for his candidacy, and when he reaches a stage where he cannot run, we will look at who can win the presidential elections, and from the most appropriate candidate, and if the need for another decision arises, and I hope that this will not happen, we will make the decision together, and the important thing is that we will do everything we can to change the current government headed by Erdogan.
Last Monday, Istanbul University canceled a master’s degree granted to Imamoglu, and stripped him of another academic degree, after he canceled his university degree on March 18, just one day before his arrest on charges related to corruption suspicions in the Istanbul municipality, which he took over since his election for the first time in 2019.
A specialized committee at the University of Istanbul relied on the previous decision to cancel the degree of the university imam ofoglu, pointing out that the lack of a university degree automatically nullifies a master’s degree, and that the Imam ofoglu did not meet the condition of “university graduation” stipulated in the regulations of Istanbul University students, published in the Official Gazette on July 6, 1987, due to “defects in conditions” at the time of registration.
The committee also ordered the removal of the graduation data of Imamoglu from the academic registration system, and the update of the higher education information system.
Thus, the educational status of the mayor of Istanbul, who is held to the secondary stage, was restored, and a university degree should be obtained as a condition for candidacy for higher positions, and the presidency of the Republic under the laws in force.
Parliamentary committee and red line
On the other hand, Ozil announced that his party will participate in a parliamentary committee that will work on setting the legal framework for the disarmament of the PKK, within the framework of what the government calls the “Turkey free of terrorism” initiative, and the Kurdish side calls it the process of “peace and democratic society.
Ozil said: “The Speaker of Parliament, we are working, Kortulmush, on our request, and the decision will be taken in the committee with a qualified majority, and not by a simple majority.” He added: “Our main demand was equal and qualified majority.”
Ozil set a red line for his party in relation to the committee, which is the lack of discussion of the constitution, saying that you will withdraw from the committee if we discuss anything other than the laws aimed at solving the Kurdish problem, who called us to that committee, and whoever wants to remain in it, knows that we will not discuss the constitution; So, we are completely clear in this regard, we cannot set a new constitution with those who do not adhere to the current constitution. ”
He pointed out that Erdogan did not want the presence of the “Republican People’s Party” in the committee, and for a long time.
Ozil considered that his party’s participation in the committee is a historical responsibility, noting that part of this process is that there is already a need in Turkey to prevent hate speech, and to define terrorism a real definition, and there is an urgent need to cancel some of the laws that criminalize and threaten the profession of the press, such as the Anti -Displacement Media Law, and in general, it is necessary to make every effort possible in relation to the freedom of thought.
