The Australian authorities announced, on Wednesday, that they would approve a law that prevents children under the age of sixteen from using the YouTube platform, to protect them from “predatory algorithms”.
“There is a place for social media, but there is no place for predators targeting children,” Communications Minister Anika Wells said in a statement.
In November 2024, the Australian Parliament passed a pioneering bill for the Internet, according to which it was banned from those under 16 years old, using social media, such as “Tik Talk”, “X”, “Facebook” and “Instagram”.
The text of the law was at that time with the support of deputies from both parties (the government and the opposition), but it did not include “YouTube”.
At the time, the government announced that “YouTube”, which is widely used in school lessons, will not be affected by the prohibition decision.
Commenting on the Australian authorities ’decision on Wednesday, a YouTube spokesman said that the platform is not a social network.
He added: “Our position is clear: (YouTube) is a video sharing platform, which includes a library of high -quality free content, and its viewing is increasing on television.”
