The message of solidarity decided by the Sheikh of Al -Azhar, Dr. Ahmed Al -Tayeb, regarding the first Al -Azhar secondary school in Egypt, sparked widespread interaction through media platforms and communication sites, after he preferred to “uphold the vote of sympathy over the manifestations of the celebration”, in light of the harsh humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

The official accounts of the Al -Azhar Foundation had published a statement, on Saturday, in which it said that Al -Tayeb decided to “suspend the phone calls, which he is making every year to congratulate the first Al -Azhar secondary school certificate, and the cancellation of the press conference dedicated to announcing the results of this year, and only adopting the result, declaring and publishing them, in solidarity with our people in the Gaza Strip, in light of what they suffer from suffocating famine and continuous aggression that did not witness the modern history for him.”

In an annual tradition, Al -Azhar sheikhs announce the names of the first students throughout the country during a press conference, in which the outstanding people are honored and their academic achievements are honored, and the Sheikh of Al -Azhar calls the first to congratulate them and inform them of their results, which is an annual tradition that students await, “considering it as a culmination of their efforts throughout the academic year.”

Dr. Al-Tayeb, on Saturday, the Undersecretary of Al-Azhar, Dr. Muhammad Al-Dawini, delegated to adopt the outcome of the Al-Azhar secondary certificate for the academic year 2024-2025, as the success rate in the scientific department reached 65.01 percent, while in the literary department reached 45.50 percent, with a general success rate of 53.99 %.

The Al -Azhar statement, on Saturday, stressed that this decision “comes from the feelings of deep sadness, which is overwhelmed by Al -Azhar and the Islamic and Arab nation, because of the systematic crimes of extermination”, and Al -Tayeb stressed that “the moral and humanitarian duty requires the elevation of solidarity and sympathy for the manifestations of joy and celebration.”

Al -Azhar renewed its full support for the steadfast Palestinian people, stressing that the question of Palestine “will remain in the forefront of its priorities and efforts”, calling for “standing one row, working in every way to end this aggression, ending the deadly famine and human tragedy, and enabling the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate rights in freedom, life and dignity and the recovery of its lands and capabilities.”

Although the season of announcing the results of Al -Azhar secondary school is often an occasion for the celebration, the decision to suspend Sheikh Al -Azhar is the manifestations of the celebration, praised by a large number of Egyptians in their various orientations, where they valued Al -Azhar’s position, stressing that it reflects a balance between celebrating success and sympathy for the nation’s issues.

Soon activists interacted on social media in Egypt with the decision of the Sheikh of Al -Azhar, where many of its pioneers reported the statement of Al -Azhar, considering that it is an expression of an initial position worthy of the Al -Azhar Foundation.

Al -Azhar, the successor, congratulated the successful students, calling them on more success and payment, stressing the appreciation of Dr. Al -Tayeb for the great effort that students made during this academic year, wishing them the continuation of excellence in the university stage, to be a role model in their societies, and a campaign for the message of Al -Azhar in knowledge and morals.

Other pioneers also considered that upholding the vote of sympathy on the manifestations of the celebration is a “new batch” in supporting the people of the Gaza Strip, in light of the human tragedy.

On the other hand, some of the pioneers of social media platforms did not welcome the decision of Al -Tayyib, noting that “the right of students to feel joy, and the mujtahid has the right to feel its achievement”, and stressing that the phone calls, which the Sheikh of Al -Azhar make every year “represents in itself a motive to excel among many students.”

The number of students of Al -Azhar secondary certificate exams this year reached 173 thousand and 808 students, including 73 thousand and 94 in the scientific department, and 100 thousand and 714 in the literary section.

Al -Tayeb’s decision, on Saturday, renewed the state of controversy over the “deleted statement” of Al -Azhar regarding famine in the Gaza Strip, where some pioneers alluded to it in the exhibition “criticizing the decision to suspend the first congratulations.”

Al -Azhar had published a statement through its accounts on social media, on Tuesday evening, before it initiated it, which prompted the pioneers of social media to circulate the images of the deleted statement, amid questions and criticisms, which considered the deletion as a result of “pressure” and a “unjustified” decline from the institution. This forced Al -Azhar to respond to what was raised, on Wednesday, saying that he “initiated the statement with courage and responsibility, when he realized that this statement may affect the ongoing negotiations regarding the approval of a humanitarian truce in Gaza to save the innocent, and so that this statement is not taken as an excuse to retreat from negotiation, or bargaining in it.”
