Hanna Hampton, England’s goalkeeper, called her grandfather, who died two days before the English national team won the European Women’s Cup of Nations Championship (Euro 2025).
Hampton, 24, played a pivotal role in England’s victory in the continental title for the second time in a row, after she tackled two penalty kicks during the final match against Spain on Sunday.
Hampton published a touching message alongside a picture of a goalkeeper shirt on which the word “grandfather” was printed on the inner side of the shirt collar.
“Two days before the biggest championship in my life, I left.”
“I taught me a lot, not only about football, but also about life, from being realistic, serious and flexible work, and doing things in the right way,” BBC quoted Hampton as saying.
She added, “It saddens me that you did not see me participating with our country for the first time in a major championship, which is something that I dreamed of for me, and we talked about it a lot … but I know deeply that you are still present.”
“I felt that you were with me in the tunnel leading to dressing rooms, and on the field.” In difficult moments, I heard you in my mind when I needed strength. ”
She concluded by saying: “I hope that I have made you proud of me, my grandfather, I carry your memory inside me at every moment, and I will always remain so.”
