On Monday, sessions were launched in the files of the international activists who were on board the ship “Handala”, which is part of the “Freedom Fleet” seeking to break the siege on the Gaza Strip, before the Court of Migrant Affairs in the “Jafehoun” facility in the city of Ramla, northwest of Jerusalem.
Activists before the court represent the “Adalah” human rights center, which defends Arab affairs in Israel.
The representatives of “Adalah” stated that “the Israeli authorities deal with activists as if they entered Israel illegally, even though they were taken from international waters and were forcibly transferred to Israel. They were offered two options under Israeli law, either accepting voluntary deportation or appearing before the court, which considers their continued detention until the completion of their deportation procedures.
“Adalah” indicated that the judicial procedures followed in the “Jafehoun” facility allow the Israeli authorities a wide margin of powers to continue detention, even without a fundamental legal basis, which enhances concern about the legitimacy of the continued detention of activists, as happened before with the activists of the ship “Madeleine”.
The court appeared before 12 activists who are the Americans Pradon Peloso and Cristian Smalls, Australia Tania Safi, French Justin Kempf, Emma Fouro and holds French and Swedish citizenship, Antonio La Pitcherilla from Italy, Clawy Fiona Ludine and holds the British and French nationalities, and the Spanish Sergio Toribio Sanchez and Santiago Gonzalez Vallejo, in addition to Vigdis Piofand from Norway, Australian Robert Martin and Tunisian Hatem Al -Awaini.
Most activists continue an open hunger strike, in protest against their forced detention. Their lawyers said they are in a relatively healthy state.
Israel had confiscated four ships among the convoys of the “Freedom Fleet”, which came to break the siege on Gaza, the last of which is the “Madeleine” ship on June 9.
