A German zoo killed 12 doors monkey intact due to the narrow area; What sparked protests from animal rights activists.
Nuremberg Zoo in southern Germany said on Tuesday that it had killed monkeys due to overcrowding; What led to conflicts between the chamomile and injuries.
Director Daj Enke explained that it was not possible to abandon the animals or return them to the wilderness, and that the efforts to identify the women did not succeed, according to the German News Agency.
The facility was designed for 25 adult doors in addition to young, but it included more than 40 animals in the last census. The zoo had announced its intention to kill some of the chamomile monkeys in February 2024. Activists were able to climb the fence and enter the zoo on Tuesday, some of them paste themselves to the ground in protest against the killings, and the police detained them.
A coalition of animal rights organizations announced that it will start taking legal action against the zoo.
“What we feared may be fulfilled: healthy animals had to die because a zoo has made irresponsible breeding for decades, and failed to develop sustainable solutions.”
She added, “This killing could have been avoided and it is illegal in our opinion.”
“The responsibility for the animals that are kept and raised in zoos is endless, as it becomes inappropriate in terms of space, financing or organization,” said the German animal care.
Laura Zodro of “Pro Wild Life” said the groups feared that the killing of the chamomile monkeys would create a “dangerous example.”
The politicians called for tightening the legal framework of zoos and their educational programs.
