With a new momentum, the work of the high -level international conference hosted by the United Nations General Assembly in New York for two days, and sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with French participation, “for the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of a two -state solution”, amid a serious lack of objection from the United States despite its choice of non -participation.
While French President Emmanuel Macron announced his decision to recognize the State of Palestine, it may have been an introduction to a series of other unprecedented confessions from Western and European countries, in addition to major countries in the Americans and the Southeast Asia region, US President Donald Trump, who was asked during the past two days about the issue, avoid going into a lot in these expected confessions in the State of Palestine, saying: “Let them do what they want.” He pointed out that “the United States did not make special efforts to stop this momentum,” according to a large European source told Asharq Al -Awsat.
Dozens of foreign ministers and senior officials from all countries of the world flowed to the conference that was held under the dome of the General Assembly in New York to promote the two -state solution, led by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and the French Jean Nawil Barrow, and the participation of dozens of other foreign ministers.
Israel and the United States are absent from the meeting. But when Trump was asked about the possibility of British Prime Minister Kiir Starmer announced the recognition of the State of Palestine, similar to what Macron did, he said: “I do not mind taking a position.” It is a phrase he said before, in an indication that his administration did not object to these steps, which he strongly rejects Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“A rare opportunity”
At the opening, the United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres thanked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which sponsors the international conference with the participation of France, saying: “The Palestinian -Israeli conflict has been going on for generations, defying … diplomacy, and countless decisions … defying international law.”
He pointed out that the continuation of the conflict made “the two -state solution ever.”
While he stressed that “nothing justifies the horrific terrorist attacks (October 7), and held hostages,” he stressed that “nothing justifies the destruction of Gaza … and the inhabitants’ roughness. “
The Secretary -General also talked about “the continuous settlement expansion and the escalation of settlers’ violence against the Palestinians,” stressing that “the gradual annexation of the occupied West Bank is illegal, and it must stop.” He believed that what is happening is “a part of a systematic reality that dismantles the pillars of peace in the Middle East.”
Guterres said that the two -state solution conference “represents a rare opportunity”; As “it can, but rather, be a decisive turning point, a point that stimulates irreversible progress towards ending the occupation,” calling for the establishment of “two independent, adjacent, democratic, and sovereign states, recognized by all, and fully integrated into the international community … on the basis of pre -1967 lines, and Jerusalem is the capital of both countries.”
For his part, Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, stressed that the Kingdom believes that the two -state solution is a key to the stability of the region, noting that the New York conference is a detailed station towards implementing this solution.
He added during his speech at the conference that achieving stability in the region begins by granting the Palestinian people their rights, and said: “The Kingdom believes that the two -state solution is a key to the stability of the region,” valuing the French President’s announcement of his intention to recognize the state of Palestine.
The Saudi minister stressed that the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza must stop immediately, and that his country secured with France to transfer 300 million dollars from the World Bank to Palestine.
“It is not possible to accept the targeting of civilians in Gaza,” said French Foreign Minister Barrow, noting that the war in the Strip has long, and must stop.
He continued in his speech at the conference: “We have to make a two -state solution a tangible reality,” noting that the two -state solution meets the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians, and that the conference of the two -state solution must be a turning point to implement the solution, and added: “We launched momentum that cannot be stopped to reach a political solution in the Middle East.”
“It was extremely necessary to resume the political process, the two -state solution, which today is exposed to a greater threat than ever,” he said.
17 countries participate in the conference, as well as the Saudi -French presidency, joint in various committees, to prepare two major documents expected to be issued by the conference, and they refer in particular to the origin of the problem with the end of the British Mandate on Palestine, and the perceptions developed by the partition plan approved by the United Nations in 1947 in two countries, Jewish and Arab.
Although Israel accepted the plan in the beginning, it later retreated, and the plan has since remained ink on paper. The idea of a two -state solution, based on the pre -1967 war borders, was the basis of peace talks that started since the 1990s.
Time frame
On the explosive situation in the region, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with the participation of France, launched a new momentum to embody the two -state solution as the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East, and worked to prepare a “road map” that includes specific steps, the first of which is to end the war in Gaza, while identifying the measures that “all the relevant actors to implement the two -state solution … through concrete and temporal obligations.”
Saudi diplomacy, Manal Radwan, said that the conference must “focus on a reliable political plan that is irreversible, which addresses the root cause of the conflict, and provides a real path for peace, dignity and mutual security.”
With France, the number of countries recognized in Palestine exceeded 145 of the 193 member states of the United Nations. Other countries are expected to announce similar steps to the decision of French President Macron.
This conference is expected to lead to a new batch in the direction of a summit that is still expected in September, either in Paris or in New York, on the sidelines of high -level meetings within the eighties of the United Nations General Assembly.
