Poll: The Americans’ support for the Israeli military operation in Gaza has declined
The support of the Israeli military operation in Gaza decreased significantly among American adults, and it was approved only about a third, according to a new poll conducted by the Gallub Foundation, a noticeable decrease from the beginning of the war with Hamas, when about half of the Americans agreed to the Israeli operation.
According to the Associated Press, the new poll found that about half of the American adults now have a negative view of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, the highest negative evaluation he received since joining the Gallup polls in 1997.
The poll was held from 7 to 21 July, while famine reports in Gaza led to international criticism of Israel’s decision to restrict food aid, but before President Donald Trump expressed his concern about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
These results emphasize the great loss of the Israeli government in the United States. But not everyone is changing, but the war has become more political.
The growing condemnation is driven by Democrats and independents, who became less likely to agree to Israel’s actions than in November 2023, weeks after the sudden “Hamas” attack on October 7, and after Israel expanded its ground attack in Gaza.
On the other hand, Republicans still largely support both Israeli military measures and Netanyahu.
Most Americans now reject the Israeli military action in Gaza, as the new survey found that about 6 out of 10 adults reject the military action that Israel has done in Gaza, an increase of 45 percent in November 2023.
Support for war has diminished in Gallup polls for some time. In March 2024, about half of the American adults rejected the Israeli military action in Gaza, which decreased slightly over the year.
At a new low level, only 8 percent of Democrats, and a quarter of independents said they are now agreeing to the Israeli military campaign. Some of this decline may be attributed to the change in management.
While former President Joe Biden faced severe opposition from his democratic colleagues over his dealings with the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, they may be more frustrated than Trump’s Republican approach.
Young people are also more inclined to denounce the actions of Israel. Only about one in 10 adults under the age of 35 says that he agrees to the Israeli military options in Gaza, compared to about half of the 55 years old or more.
Megan Brennan, chief of Gallup editor, says the last numbers reflect the ongoing partisan division. Even with the increasing dissatisfaction of the Democrats from the Israeli military campaign, Republicans are still supportive.
“We have seen this decline in support since last fall, and it is actually driven by Democrats and independents,” Brennan says. Republicans are still ready to stick to this situation at the present time. ”
Netanyahu’s popularity among American adults is historically low, and Netanyahu’s views have become less positive over the past few years, as more negatively seen more than positive in the measurements made since the start of the war in Gaza.
About half of the American adults (52 percent) now have an unfavorable view of Netanyahu in the new survey, which coincided with Netanyahu’s recent visit to the United States. Only 29 percent look positively, about 2 out of 10 either they have not heard of it, or they have no opinion.
This is a change, albeit not large, since December 2023, when 47 percent of American adults had an unfavorable view of Netanyahu, and 33 percent had positive opinion, but a reflection on April 2019, when the number of American adults viewed him more positively than negative.
Republicans have a much more positive view of Netanyahu than Democrats and independents. About two -thirds of Republicans are viewed positively, which is in line with last year. About 1 in 10 Democrats and 2 out of 10 feels independent of the same feeling.
“This is the first time that we have seen most Americans have an unfavorable view of it. All these questions in this survey are mainly shown to us the same story, and it is not a good story for the Israeli government at the present time,” Brennan says.
Trump is unlikely to face the same pressure on his approach to Israel. More than half of the adults in the United States (55 percent) do not agree to Trump’s dealings with the situation in the Middle East, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Associated Press -Noor in July.
However, the conflict did not burden Trump as much as the heaviest of Biden, who saw the Democrats divided on this issue. This is due to the strong support of Trump from his base in this case, which is more reflected in the continued approval of the Republicans on Israeli military action.
About 8 out of 10 Republicans agree that Trump’s dealings with the situation in the Middle East. On the other hand, only about 4 out of 10 Democrats agreed to deal with Biden with the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians last summer, shortly before his withdrawal from the presidential race.
In an opinion poll conducted by the Associated Press and Noork in March, the Republicans were much more inclined than Democrats and independents to say they are more sympathetic to the Israelis.
